Claire Inwood
Biography
Claire began making dolls ten years ago while living in Denver, Colorado. Inspired by a nine year old friend she began to make original cloth dolls using primarily recycled fabrics.
“I begin my dolls with closely woven new or recycled cotton or linen, hand draw the outline and machine sew the bodies. They are stuffed with teased polyester which is produced in New Zealand. The clothing and faces are hand sewn, embellished with embroidery, vintage trimmings and buttons, natural fibres, felt work, shell and beads. Many of the pacific dolls feature the native grass, pingao, as head-dresses. It is soaked to soften for weaving and dries in a lovely range of golds and browns. I sustainably collect the pingao at Piha where it grows on the dunes. Since returning to New Zealand I have made dolls with a distinctly Pacific style . The dolls are the perfect medium to practice my love of textiles, weaving, sculpture costume and humour."
We have a small selection of Claire's dolls in store.
