Biography
Ashley grew up on the west coast of the South Island and moved to Nelson when he was fifteen. After returning from a few years travelling and working overseas, he stumbled upon jewellery making. He studied with Peter Elsbury in Nelson and Peter Minturn in Auckland. He then spent a year working with four other jewellers at "Mint Jewellery Collective" in Nelson. He has also spent a year working at the "Quoil" workshop in Wellington with Belinda Hager. Ashley is interested in the way jewellery involves both creativity and construction; the combination of tools, materials and processes along with design and creativity and how these affect each other. Ashley has been making jewellery full time since 2003 and now lives in Nelson. He makes jewellery in a small workshop at his home as well as spending time at Mint. He works mostly in silver, copper, gold and polyester resin. Ashley tries to reflect both the human and natural environment in his work by using symbols and materials that have meaning to him and represent where he comes from. |
